Well, firstly: because that would have been boring.
And secondly:
Joan is an actual nickname of mine in real life as well.
Waterhouse: 1) I love the paintings by John William Waterhouse. 2) While I read Neal Stephenson's Baroque Cycle I was fascinated by the character Daniel Waterhouse. 3) If you take my real surname, research in it's etymology, flip things around a bit and translate it to English you might end up with something like Waterhouse.
